Almost every Merle Haggard song has some weird, seemingly earnest angle that warms my heart and usually makes me laugh. In this one here he makes multiple declarations about his tendency to drink his beer in a tavern, which makes me picture old Hag wearing chain mail sitting at a long oaken table with ogres. None of those ogres better be on welfare.
In this '78 video version I am taken aback by our man's guitar skills and his weird, perhaps cocaine induced, tongue movements. I had no idea he could pick like that.
